Our weekend classes are getting busier (yay!) and as Diana Ceramic continues to grow, we’re looking for a passionate, people-focused Part-Time Wheel Throwing Tutor to join our warm, creative studio team in Melbourne. 🤍

If you love pottery, enjoy helping others build confidence on the wheel, and want to work in a supportive studio environment, we’d love to hear from you.

Role

Availability

• Fridays & weekends

• Plus one flexible weekday

Minimum hours

18 hours per week

What’s on offer

Great salary

Commission opportunities

About the role

This is a hands-on teaching role focused on helping students feel comfortable, capable, and inspired at the wheel. You’ll be guiding beginners (and confident returners) through core wheel-throwing skills, troubleshooting common issues in real time, and creating a calm, encouraging vibe in the studio.

You’ll be part of a team that values kindness, clear communication, and a studio experience that feels welcoming from the moment students walk in.

What you’ll be doing

Depending on the class format and schedule, your week may include:

• Demonstrating core wheel-throwing techniques (centring, opening, pulling walls, shaping)

• Coaching students one-on-one during class time

• Explaining process steps in beginner-friendly language (without overwhelming people)

• Helping students troubleshoot common challenges (wobble, collapse, uneven walls, off-centre pieces)

• Setting students up for success with best-practice tips (water control, tool use, hand positioning, posture)

• Supporting a positive, tidy studio environment before, during, and after sessions

• Communicating clearly with the studio team so classes run smoothly

What we’re looking for

You don’t need to be “perfect” on the wheel — we’re more interested in someone who can teach with patience, clarity, and warmth.

You’ll be a great fit if you:

• Have solid wheel-throwing skills and can confidently demonstrate fundamentals

• Enjoy working with people and helping beginners learn without feeling judged

• Communicate clearly and kindly (especially when students feel stuck)

• Can read the room and adapt your teaching style to different learners

• Are reliable, punctual, and comfortable committing to regular weekly shifts

• Thrive in a creative, supportive team environment

Why is this role different

Teaching pottery is about more than technique — it’s about creating a space where people can slow down, try something new, and feel proud of what they make.

In busy weekend classes, students often arrive excited but nervous. The right tutor helps them settle in, focus on the process, and walk out feeling like, “I can actually do this.”

If that sounds like the kind of impact you’d love to have, you’ll fit right in here.

The schedule (what “Fridays + weekends + one weekday” typically means)

We’re looking for someone with consistent availability across our busiest times:

Fridays (popular for end-of-week creative wind-downs)

Weekends (peak demand)

One flexible weekday (helps support our growing timetable)

Minimum commitment is 18 hours per week, so this role suits someone who wants meaningful, regular studio hours rather than the occasional shift.

Pay and commission

This role includes a great salary, plus commission opportunities. Details can be discussed with shortlisted applicants so everything is clear and aligned with your availability and experience.

What it’s like teaching wheel throwing here

To give you a feel for the vibe, here’s what students typically need most in a beginner wheel class:

• A calm, clear demo (with the “why” explained simply)

• Reassurance when clay goes sideways (because it will!)

• Quick, gentle corrections that make an instant difference

• Encouragement to focus on progress over perfection

• A tutor who celebrates small wins: first centred mound, first cylinder, first clean pull

If you love those moments — when someone goes from “I’m terrible at this” to “Wait… I made that?!” — you’ll probably love this role.
